Castles of Emilia Romagna

If you love castles, then you need to go to Emilia Romagna!

This region houses not only the queen of Italian castles (Bardi), but so many other wonderful fortresses, castles...whatever you want to call them.

We have visited a lot of them, and have many more on our list.  Some, we love, but don't have digital photos.  we will be updating this site as we have more material.

Bardi

Bardi wows you as you round the bend and catch your first glimpse through the trees of this incredible fortress.  It's not just a castle you happen upon on your way from here to there.  You have to want to go there.  And you should....want to go there, that is.

The castle reigns over the hills of the happenings, just on the border between Liguria and Emilia Romagna.  It is in the province of Parma, and also reachable from the Mediterranean Coast.

Bardi is almost a 2-hour drive from La Spezia (think Cinque Terre) or from Parma, it is just over an hour.  Whichever way you go, it is a beautiful drive through mountains, farms and villages.

Bardi Castle has been fully restored, from the dungeons, servants' quarters, state rooms, ramparts, and everything in between.

If you are a lover of castles, you won't want to miss this one.

If you're not sure about castles, Bardi will make you a believer!
Other wonderful castles of Emilia Romagna

Torrechiara.  If it weren't for Bardi, this one would be at the top of our list.

Castell'Arquato, included in the most beautiful villages of Italy,  is a charming hilltown in the Appenine foothills between Piacenza and Parma.  The small castle  offers wonderful views from its tower and ramparts.

Ferrara

Ferrara, a lovely old city of Emilia Romagna, boasts a massive castle, complete with moat, in the middle of the city.  It is worth a visit.  As soon as we have more recent photos, we will update this site.

Fontanellato, Vigoleno, Vignola, Soragna.  There are so many more.  I will update this site as time permits.
